SALN S.A.

Discover the Nouakchott Coastal Development Company, a joint initiative of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania and Meridiam, aimed at protecting the city of Nouakchott from the risks of submersion and flooding, while enhancing its coastline for the benefit of all residents.

The context

Nouakchott, the capital of Mauritania located on the Atlantic Ocean, is today highly threatened by erosion and submersion risks. Parts of the city have been built below sea level or in flood-prone areas, and its dune cord has been significantly weakened in recent years due to natural erosion, urbanization, and the development of industrial and economic activities. The vulnerability of Nouakchott’s coastline is accelerating under the effects of climate change. According to the IPCC report titled “Climate Change 2021: The Physical Science Basis,” coastal areas will face sea level rise throughout the 21st century, which will contribute to increasing the frequency and severity of floods in low-lying areas and exacerbate coastal erosion.

Our Vision

The Company will deploy a program of developments and infrastructure that will protect the city of Nouakchott from the risks of submersion and erosion. This program will also provide solutions for flood-prone low-lying areas and will enhance the attractiveness of the coastline for the entire population.

The program has been designed and will be implemented to meet the strategic orientations of the public authorities in terms of socio-economic development, coastal preservation, and urban planning. It innovates by mobilizing natural coastal protection solutions and by linking climate adaptation financing to the economic value created or preserved by the project.

The proposed developments will take into account the needs of the most vulnerable populations, help preserve existing activities, and enable the development of new economic opportunities that create jobs.

The program is designed to be resilient to the impacts of climate change or other external factors, using environmentally friendly and sustainable solutions as much as possible.
