Public Consultation Workshop as part of the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) related to the development works of the Nouakchott coastal protection and enhancement project
As part of the ongoing public consultation on the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA), the Nouakchott Coastal Development Company (SALN) organized a workshop on July 8, 2025, at the SunSet Hotel. The workshop focused on the presentation of the Terms of Reference (ToR) of the ESIA for the Nouakchott coastal protection and enhancement project.
This workshop, dedicated to the Sebkha municipality, aimed to present the ToR of the ESIA related to the planned developments, highlight the potential impacts, and gather the views of the stakeholders involved.
The session was held under the authority of the Hakem and the Mayor of Sebkha, in the presence of representatives from the Ministry of Environment, local NGOs, and community actors who came to share their concerns and recommendations.

On July 7, 2025, SALN organized a public consultation workshop at the SunSet Hotel as part of the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) for the Nouakchott Coastal Protection and Enhancement Project.
This workshop, focused on the municipality of Tevragh-Zeïna, aimed to present the Terms of Reference (ToR) of the ESIA related to the planned developments under the project, to outline its potential impacts, and to gather feedback from the relevant stakeholders.
The meeting was held under the authority of the Deputy Mayor of Tevragh-Zeïna, with the participation of representatives from the Ministry of Environment, local NGOs, and community stakeholders who came to share their concerns and recommendations.

WORKSHOP ON THE PRESENTATION OF THE NOUAKCHOTT COASTAL PROTECTION AND ENHANCEMENT PROJECT
On Thursday, April 10, 2025, a workshop was held with local elected officials and
representatives of national authorities, dedicated to presenting the main guidelines of the
Nouakchott Coastal Protection and Enhancement Project.
This workshop provided an opportunity to share the planned programming priorities of the
project—protective measures against climate risks, resilient infrastructure, and the creation
of new urban spaces—and to initiate a constructive dialogue around land tenure issues.
The discussions highlighted the importance of a collaborative approach to ensure the
project’s sustainability and its strong territorial integration.

SALN will participate in the Finance Your Cities (FYC) Innovation Awards Ceremony, which
will take place in Cairo, Egypt, from November 4 to 8, 2024, during the 12th World Urban
Forum (WUF12).
SALN will be represented by its Chief Executive Officer, Karim Gabriel, as well as
representatives from the Ministry of Housing, Urban Planning, and Territorial Development
(MHUAT) of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania.

SALN recently took part in two major initiatives:
The co-creation workshops for the Coastal Development Directive (CDD), a crucial
step in shaping the strategy for protecting our coastline.
A site visit to the breach repair works carried out by the WACA program in Mauritania,
highlighting the importance of close cooperation to ensure the sustainable protection
of Nouakchott’s coastline.
These actions reinforce our commitment to jointly shaping the future of our coastline.
SALN is pleased to announce the conclusion of a partnership with British International Investment (BII)
SALN is pleased to announce the conclusion of a partnership with British International Investment (BII) under which the British development financial institution has committed to participate up to 1,4M€ to the development of the project for the protection and enhancement of the Nouakchott coastline.
This major partnership represents an important step for SALN and a recognition of the essential character of its project to help the city of Nouakchott cope with the effects of climate change and improve the living environment of its inhabitants, in support of the modernization program launched by the President of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania.
A signing ceremony took place at the premises of SALN in Nouakchott this Friday, November 29.

On January 23, 2025, SALN organized a project presentation workshop at the FASQ Hotel.
The event brought together several representatives from the Mauritanian government,
including officials from the supervising ministry—the Ministry of Housing, Urban Planning,
and Territorial Development—as well as members of the regional council and representatives
from local municipalities.
Meridiam, a shareholder alongside the Mauritanian State, was also represented.
The workshop gathered donors and embassy representatives, providing an opportunity to
discuss collaboration prospects while emphasizing the importance of strengthened
cooperation to ensure the sustainable protection and development of Nouakchott’s coastline.
The SALN Awarded for Its Climate Finance Innovations at the World Urban Forum in Cairo
We are very pleased to announce that the SALN received an award at the Finance Your
Cities (FYC) Innovation Awards Ceremony! This event took place in Cairo, Egypt, as part of
the 12th World Urban Forum (WUF12).
SALN, operating under the supervision of the Ministry of Housing, Urban Planning, and
Territorial Development, was represented by our CEO, Karim Gabriel, along with
representatives from the government of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania.
This award recognizes the innovations implemented by SALN to finance climate-adapted
solutions. It underscores our commitment to making Nouakchott a more livable, sustainable,
and resilient city in the face of coastal erosion and flooding challenges.
We would like to thank all our partners, especially the Mauritanian State and Meridiam, for
their invaluable support and involvement, which have made this project an integrated model
of transformation and development for the benefit of the community.
